What is Amazon Simple Email Service (SES)?
Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a highly scalable and cost-effective email forwarding and receiving platform designed to help digital marketing professionals and app developers send e-mails, marketing, notification or transaction. It’s a reliable and cost-effective service for businesses of all sizes using e-mail to stay in touch with their customers.
Amazon SES eliminates the complexity and expense of developing an internal emailing solution or licensing, installing, and running an external email solution.
You can use our SMTP interface or one of the AWS SDKs to integrate Amazon SES directly into your existing applications. You can also integrate Amazon SES e-mail sending capabilities with software you already use, such as ticket delivery systems and e-mail clients.

Pricing and billing
With Amazon SES, you only pay for your consumption. There are no minimum fees or initial fees.

Limits and restrictions
The Amazon SES sandbox is an area where new users can test Amazon SES capabilities. When your account is in the sandbox, you can only send emails to verified identities. A verified identity is an email address or domain that you have provided proof of ownership.
In addition, when your account is in the sandbox, the volume of emails you can send per day is limited, as well as the number of messages per second.
When you are ready to send e-mail to unverified recipients, send a request to increase the Amazon SES send limit through AWS Support Center.
Security and encryption
We use internal anti-spam technologies to filter messages with poor quality content. In addition, we scan all messages containing attachments for viruses and other malicious content. These processes are fully automated and do not involve human intervention. We access e-mail content only in certain circumstances, for example when we encounter delivery difficulties or when we investigate fraudulent or abusive activities.
Authentication, validation and configuration
You do not need to configure reverse DNS records to use Amazon SES. Amazon Web Services manages the IP addresses used by Amazon SES, and provides the reverse DNS records for those addresses.
Amazon SES allows you to create a private SMTP relay for use with any existing SMTP client software, including any software you develop yourself or any third-party software that can send email over the SMTP protocol.

The first step in setting up Amazon SES to receive e-mail is to check your domain. If you have already verified your domain for sending emails, you do not need to repeat this process for receiving. For more information about verifying your domain, see Verifying Domains in Amazon SES in the Amazon SES Developer Guide.
After verifying your domain, you must publish an MX record to the DNS configuration of your domain. This record refers to the email receiving endpoint for the Amazon SES region that you use to receive e-mail. For more information about publishing an MX record, see Publishing an MX Record for Receiving Email Messages through Amazon SES in the Amazon SES Developer Guide.
The final step in configuring receiving emails in Amazon SES is to create a receive rule. Receiving rules tell Amazon SES what to do with e-mail sent to your domain. For example, you can configure Amazon SES to send incoming email to an Amazon S3 bucket or send you a notification through Amazon SNS. Amazon SES uses content filtering technologies to scan outgoing e-mail. These content filters help ensure that content sent through Amazon SES complies with ISP standards. To help you improve the deliverability of your e-mail, Amazon SES provides a feedback loop that includes sender return, claim, and delivery notifications.
Returns to shippers and claims
Amazon SES forwards you back to sender and complaint notifications by e-mail or sends them to an Amazon SNS topic, depending on how you set up your Amazon SES account.
Delivery notifications, which are triggered when Amazon SES successfully sends one of your e-mails to a recipient’s e-mail server, are sent to you only through Amazon SNS.
Spam and viruses
Amazon SES uses a number of safeguards against spam and viruses. It uses blocking lists to prevent emails from unwanted senders from entering the system. It also performs virus scans on each incoming e-mail that contains an attachment. Amazon SES provides you with the results of its spam detection, allowing you to decide whether you can trust each message. In addition to the results of antispam and antivirus scans, Amazon SES provides the conclusions of the DKIM and SPF checks.
Amazon SES and other AWS services
Amazon WorkMail uses Amazon SES to send and receive e-mails. When you configure Amazon WorkMail, the service creates two items in your SES configuration settings: a send permission policy that allows Amazon WorkMail to send email through your domain, and a receive rule that defines an action. WorkMail that sends incoming mail from your domain to Amazon WorkMail. If you remove any of these items, Amazon WorkMail will not work properly.
Amazon SES provides an SMTP interface for seamless integration with applications that can send emails via SMTP. You can connect directly with this SMTP interface from your applications, or configure your existing email server to use this interface as an SMTP relay.

API and SDK
In addition to support for SMTP delivery, Amazon SES provides the following APIs: SendEmail and SendRawEmail. These two APIs provide different levels of control for composing the e-mail message itself.

The SendEmail API prompts the user to provide only one source address, one destination address, one message object, and one message body.
On this API’s call, Amazon SES automatically builds and sends an MIME multi-part email message that is correctly formatted and optimized for display by client email software.
The SendRawEmail API provides the advanced user with the flexibility to format and send their own raw e-mail by specifying headers, MIME parts, and content types.
